Softvér
Softvér (software)
Programmes, applications, and operating systems running on hardware. The intangible logic of computer systems.
What is software?
Software is the intangible component of a computer system — programmes, applications, operating systems, and scripts that run on physical hardware. Without software, hardware is merely a box of electronics; without hardware, software has nowhere to run.
Three categories of software relevant to a business:
- Operating system (OS) — Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android. The foundational software layer that manages hardware.
- Application software — programmes that users run: Office, ERP, CRM, browsers, specialist professional applications.
- System software — runs in the background, supporting applications: databases, web servers, middleware.
When it is used
Software accounts for the largest share of the IT budget for a medium-sized EU business in 2026 — typically 60–70%, including SaaS subscriptions, licences, and custom development. Three basic delivery models:
| Model | Characteristics | Example |
|---|---|---|
| On-premise | Installed on the company’s own server | Legacy ERP (local install) |
| SaaS | Runs in the provider’s cloud | Modulario, Microsoft 365 |
| Hybrid | Part on-premise, part cloud | Some ERP systems |
In 2026, SaaS dominates for 90% of SMB use cases — predictable monthly costs, no capital investment, automatic updates.
When commissioning custom software development, it is important to address: who owns the source code, in which programming language it is written, what documentation exists, and what the dependencies are (open-source vs. proprietary).
